The cover letter is where most applications stall

The CV and references are ready. What is missing is the text that explains why this role and why this person. That is where applications usually fail -- not on qualifications.

What actually goes wrong

  • The opening line

    “I hereby apply for the advertised position” says nothing the subject line did not already say. The opening decides whether the rest gets read.

  • The same letter every time

    A letter that fits every role fits none. By the fifth application, most people are simply repeating themselves.

  • Claiming instead of showing

    “team player, resilient, motivated” appears in every second application. What counts is the point in the CV where it becomes visible.

  • The gap in the CV

    Hiding it does not help -- it gets noticed. Placing it in one sentence takes the weight out of it.

    Why this role, why this company, why you. Everything else is already in the CV and does not need repeating.

    Three or four paragraphs. What does not fit on a page belongs in the interview.

  • It sounds like a person

    A text nobody would have spoken does not read like one either. Templates help with structure, not with tone.
